AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Pair of Antique Chinese Hand-Painted Architectural Panels / Shutters (c. 1870–1910) 60x100

A beautiful and decorative pair of authentic Chinese hand-painted wooden architectural panels, probably dating from the late Qing to early Republican period (circa 1880–1930).

The panels are constructed from multiple solid timber planks with hand-worked rails and retain their original hand-painted decoration on a rich cinnabar-red ground. The scenes depict traditional Chinese opera or legendary figures in elaborate costumes with pheasant-feather headdresses, set within interiors featuring auspicious motifs including pomegranates, flowers and mountain landscapes.

The reverse shows traditional plank construction with natural shrinkage, historic oxidation and old insect damage consistent with age. The hanging rings appear to be later additions, suggesting the panels were originally used as interior shutters, cupboard doors or architectural panels before being converted for wall display.

Condition:

Original hand-painted decoration with attractive age-related wear and patina.
Historic inactive woodworm/insect damage in places, typical of pieces of this age.
Structurally sound and highly decorative.
Later hanging fittings for display.

Approximate Date: Late 19th to early 20th century (c. 1880–1930).

Origin: China

Material: Chinese pine
