Description from the seller
Virgilio AUDAGNA (1903-1994) – Sculpture "Pierrot" in Glazed Terracotta Art Deco
Profile: Virgilio Audagna trained at the Accademia Albertina in Turin and worked for a long time between Piedmont and Liguria/The Blue Coast. In addition to sculpture in marble, bronze, and enameled cement, he dedicated himself with great mastery to ceramics and artistic terracotta.
Technique and Modeling: His figures in glazed terracotta or maiolica are characterized by strong expressionism and a plastic and vibrant modeling. The dramatic pose, the poignant gesture of the character (the Pierrot/Pagliaccio), and the textural glaze on the garment fully reflect Audagna's sculptural style.
Style and Modeling: The piece shows a strongly expressive, textural modeling, characteristic of Italian art ceramics of late 19th to early 20th-century taste, centered on the figures of the Commedia dell'Arte (in particular the pathetically melancholy figure of Pierrot/Pagliaccio).
Paper label: Under the base there is also the remnant of an old paper label with a border decorated in blue geometric dots, typical of inventory/gallery labels or classification labels of art manufactories from the mid-century period.
Conditions: Excellent in all parts, no cracks or repaired areas, only a small loss about 1 cm wide. Under the base (Attached photo)
