Description from the seller
Attention: due to customs regulations we can only ship inside the European Union. Please ensure you have a valid EU shipping address before placing a bid.
Ancient Roman bronze terminal from the decorative apron of a military cingulum. The upper section consists of a long, profiled fitting that originally enclosed the end of a narrow leather strap. A hooked lower terminal supports an articulated leaf-shaped pendant with a pointed finial. The front of the pendant is decorated with several punched ring-and-dot motifs.
The bronze retains areas of pale surface coating, probably from its original tinning. The small suspension ring and leather cord are modern additions, allowing the ancient fitting to be worn as a pendant.
-> The cingulum militare was an important element of the Roman soldier’s equipment and a visible symbol of military status. During the Early Imperial period, some belts incorporated an apron of narrow leather straps decorated with metal mounts and terminating in articulated bronze pendants. These movable terminals created a distinctive visual and audible effect when the soldier walked.
Size: ± 67.8 mm
Good solid condition, wearable. The articulated elements remain movable. Surface wear, deposits and minor irregularities consistent with age and use. The original leather strap is no longer present. Modern suspension ring and cord.
Certificate of Authenticity (PDF) is available upon request for all lots with a hammer price of €100 or higher.
