According to Indian mythology, rubies were formed from the blood drops of the demon Vala. In ancient India, the ruby protected its wearer from harm in particular and preserved their mental and physical health. Another belief was that if you offered a beautiful ruby to the god Krishna, you would be reborn as a ruler.
The chromium contained in rubies induces natural fluorescence, stimulated by both visible and (ultraviolet) invisible light. Fluorescence can make the color of a ruby even more intense and thus increase its value.
