Description from the seller
On 1 December 2010, the cultural heritage of Marten Toonder (all the work Marten Toonder himself made) was officially transferred by the heirs to the Letterkundig Museum Leiden and has since then been the property of the Dutch State. In November 2018, the archive of the Marten Toonder Studios was donated to the Literature Museum in The Hague and the Eye Filmmuseum in Amsterdam. See the last photo. Through the above developments, it is ruled out that from this estate any original work by Marten Toonder himself or Marten Toonder Studios will be offered on the market in addition to the material already circulating.
Coen van Hunnik, also known as "J.C. van Hunnik", was a Dutch artist and painter. He is known for his nostalgic drawings and watercolors of typical Dutch landscapes and sceneries, which are available on countless forms of merchandise. He also illustrated many children's books. Johannes Coenraad van Hunnik was born in 1925 in Rotterdam as the fifth child in a family of nine. The family struggled in the crisis years of the 1930s and endured the bombardments of Rotterdam by the Germans in May 1940. Coen was sent to the small village of Vledder in East Netherlands for forced labor and settled after the liberation in Amsterdam. He worked at the Toonder Studios, where he worked together with Marten Toonder’s wife Phiny Dick on 'Olle Kapoen'. Van Hunnik went to work in the early 1950s for Mulder & Zoon and illustrated various children's and fairy-tale books for this publisher. Such as the books 'Mijn dierenboek', 'Pret en spel', 'Vrolijke kinderen', 'Het avontuur van konijntje Snuf', 'Dieren op de boerderij', 'Mijn dierenboek' and 'Drie kleine eendjes en de libelle'. He also illustrated the series 'Mark en Mieke', children's books by Els Stam.
Van Hunnik was a master in drawing animals. It was his specialty.
Van Hunnik's paintings of Dutch landscapes and scenery continue to be sold today in tourist shops. They appear on prints, postcards, tiles, signs, bowls, cups and other items. The artist published his autobiography in 2013, 'Toen wij uit Rotterdam vertrokken'. He died on 26 July 2016.
Original works by Van Hunnik from his period at Toonder Studios were lost in the fire at Toonder Studios in the early 1970s, and there is therefore virtually nothing from that (his very best) period in circulation.
This lot contains a beautiful, large drawing that Van Hunnik made during his years at Marten Toonder Studios for an illustrated story in Tom Poes Weekblad/Pum Pum. See what a wonderful technique with brush and East Indian ink he used. The drawing is in the bottom right corner featuring Van Hunnik's unique monogram.
Also see the photos that give an honest view of what is on offer.
This beautiful drawing will be well packed and sent to the new owner by registered post.
