Description from the seller
Ancient Devotional Ensemble
18th-Century Polychrome Wooden Virgin and Child with Flemish Oak Chapel
Beautiful old traditional devotional set consisting of a carved and polychrome wooden Virgin and Child, presented in its old glazed niche in solid oak.
The sculpture depicts the Virgin holding the Infant Jesus who holds a book. Probably Italian work of Alpine or North Italian tradition (Tyrolean influence), dating probably to the 18th century.
The statue retains significant ancient polychromy with traces of original gilding. The faces display a naïve and expressive character typical of popular Baroque religious works.
The sculpture shows:
* a beautiful old patina;
* wear consistent with age;
* subtle, older restorations visible at the Virgin's hand and the book held by the Child;
* old traces of wood-borers, now treated and stabilized.
The display niche is made of solid oak and features high-quality Flemish Baroque architecture with an old glazed door. Interior painted in a deep Marian blue. Old joints and entirely traditional construction.
Ancient Belgian family provenance.
According to family tradition, the ensemble was displayed during Christian festivities at Averbode (Flanders). The object comes from a family of collectors and antique dealers for several generations.
Niche dimensions:
* height: 85 cm
* width: 40 cm
* depth: 22 cm
Dimensions of the statue:
* height: approximately 30 cm
Condition:
Good overall condition considering its age. Wear, small losses, old restorations and signs of use in line with the age and devotional function of the ensemble.
Decorative, historical and collectible object with a strong presence and fine authenticity.
