This iconic table lamp, designed by Tomas Jellinek for Ikea in the 1980s (model L9003, series "Cumulus"), is a masterpiece of postmodern Scandinavian design.
The lamp is defined by its dramatic yet clean arc. A single tubular arm in chrome-plated metal arches gracefully from a weighted round base to suspend the lampshade in a cantilevered position. The shade itself is a flat, domed, smooth disk that evokes the look of a stylized cloud (hence the name "Cumulus") or perhaps a flying saucer UFO. Its form is minimalist but it has a strong sculptural presence.
The arched arm is in polished chrome steel. The switch is operated by a distinctive white pull cord with a small cylindrical tassel, hanging from the center of the chrome shade.
