Antique Collection of Three Silver-Mounted Cut-Crystal Objects – English and Dutch, 19th–Early 20th Century
Origin: England and the Netherlands; one piece of uncertain origin
Period: Late 19th to early 20th century
Materials: Cut crystal and silver mounts
Quantity: 3 objects
Total weight: 445 grams crystal and silver together
Description
An attractive collection of three antique cut-crystal objects with decorative silver mounts, comprising two perfume or scent bottles and a tall, sculptural crystal vase. The collection combines the elegance of Victorian English silverwork with the distinctive character of Dutch silver-mounted glassware.
The pieces feature richly faceted crystal, ornamental metalwork and distinctive silhouettes, making them suitable for collectors of antique perfume bottles, historical glassware and European silver.
1. Victorian silver-mounted crystal perfume bottle, Birmingham, 1898
The first piece is a substantial, spherical perfume bottle with a beautifully cut crystal body and an ornate, domed silver stopper. The crystal is decorated with an intricate geometric pattern of diamond cuts and facets, while the silver stopper features elaborate engraved floral motifs, scrolling foliage and decorative borders.
The silver mounts bear British hallmarks comprising the lion passant for sterling silver, the anchor of Birmingham and a date letter identified as y, indicating 1898. The maker’s mark remains illegible.
Weight: 263 g, including crystal and silver components.
Dimensions: 11cm height, 7 cm width, depth approximately.
Condition: The silver displays tarnishing, patina and age-related wear. The crystal inside the bottle has suffered damage, with pieces broken away, and has been repaired. This damage is not visible when the bottle is closed. Please consult the pictures to assess the damage.
2. Cut-crystal scent bottle with sculptural figural stopper
The second piece is a smaller, pear-shaped scent bottle with a faceted crystal body, an elongated cylindrical silver-coloured neck mount and a distinctive sculptural figural stopper.
The crystal features bold geometric cuts and intersecting facets that create attractive reflections. The unusual stopper gives the bottle a distinctive decorative character.
The metal mounts bear marks that are too worn to identify conclusively. The precise origin, maker and silver fineness therefore remain unconfirmed.
Weight: 57 g, including crystal and stopper.
Condition: The metal mounts show substantial tarnishing and surface wear. The figural stopper has significant damage, including a prominent missing or broken section. Please consult the photographs carefully to assess the damage.
Dimensions: 12 cm height and 4 width and depth approximately
3. Dutch silver-mounted cut-crystal vase
The third piece is a tall, elegant crystal vase with a flared opening, a sculptural narrowed waist and a substantial faceted base. Its elongated, flowing cuts create striking reflections and emphasise the vase’s architectural form.
The foot bears a sword-shaped hallmark identified as Dutch, together with a second, illegible mark. This supports an attribution to the Netherlands, although the maker and precise date remain unknown. The exact silver fineness has not been independently identified.
Weight: 125 grams with crystal and silver included
Dimensions: 15cm height and 4 cm depth and with approximately
Condition: The silver rim shows tarnishing, surface marks and wear consistent with age and use. Please refer to the photographs for a detailed assessment of the crystal and mount.
Overall assessment
Together, these three objects form a decorative collection of European silver-mounted crystal, spanning traditional Victorian ornament and sculptural glass design. The Birmingham hallmarks on the spherical perfume bottle provide the strongest chronological attribution, dating its silver mounts to 1898. The vase has a Dutch sword hallmark, while the smaller scent bottle remains of uncertain origin.
The collection is offered in its present condition, with the damage and repairs described above. The maker of each piece remains unidentified where the marks are illegible. Again please consult the pictures of the damages.
