AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

A beautiful example of a late 19th-century French Napoleon III writing slope or writing desk from Nancy.

Made of pressed papier-mâché and painted with historical depictions of the Battle of Nancy in 1477. On the side, the crest of Nancy with the Latin motto 'Non Inultus Premor' (which means 'No one escapes punishment'): the official motto of the French city of Nancy.

The frequently depicted thistle is the iconic symbol of Nancy and the Lorraine region.

The papier-mâché is finished with lacquer layers to give it a striking resemblance to a rich wood grain.

Origin between 1870 and 1900. The bright red interior is characteristic of that period.

The case shows some wear to the lacquer in places (see photos) and is missing one of the four ball feet. The hinges and the knob are still in good and original condition. In the top left, a small piece is missing from the edge. For its age, however, in nice condition.

I pack well and ship insured.
