Dutch earthenware vase, model 1017, bottle-shaped with a full belly, blue cobalt glaze and floral decoration in green, yellow and brown, attributed to Brantjes & Co. Purmerend and dating from ca. 1900–1910, 21.5 cm high and 17 cm wide and deep, in good condition with small signs of aging and spots.
Description from the seller
This vase was probably made by the firm Wed. N.S.A. Brantjes & Co from Purmerend in the period between 1895 and 1904. The vase has a very well-known model, but an unknown decoration. The vase, model 1017, is a bottle-shaped vase with a very bulbous body, 21.5 cm high and 17 cm wide. There have been several decorations for this model, usually indicated by a letter. Because the markings on the bottom of the vase are missing (this happens often with Brantjes), it is not clear which decoration it corresponds to. In any case the decoration is somewhat stricter and less ornate than we know from the Purmerend factory. It may be an experiment or a trial piece. The decoration is not depicted in the book Purmerend Jugendstil Aardewerk 1895-1907. The vase is painted with a cobalt blue background on which, on several sides of the vase, a flower has been painted in green, yellow and brown colors. The vase is further signed with AB (unknown painter) and has another unreadable marking. There is also a ‘W’ stamped on the bottom. The vase is in beautiful condition.
