What later became a fashion phenomenon was originally pure necessity for hunting. The lion trim had the advantage that the hindquarters wouldn’t become heavy when swimming, and the hair around the chest kept the heart warm. The tufts to protect the boats against the sharp reeds and the plume on its tail ensured it was visible in tall grass or reeds.
