Pair of original French Art Nouveau bronze vases, La Nuit and Le Jour, designed by Virgile Morey circa 1890, each 22 cm high with marble bases, in good condition with minor signs of age.
Description from the seller
A splendid and rare pair of original French Art Nouveau decorative vases titled "La Nuit" (The Night) and "Le Jour" (The Day), designed by the renowned French sculptor Virgile Morey (active ca. 1883-1895).
In contrast to the many vases from this period that are made of art bronze (régule/white metal), this pair represents a high-quality rendition in solid bronze. This is clearly evident from the authentic gold/copper-colored underlayer visible at the characteristic wear spots of the patina (see detail photo) and the heavy weight.
Artist: Virgile Morey (signed on the copper plates at the front).
Subject: Beautiful, highly detailed allegorical reliefs of winged nymphs symbolizing day and night, richly decorated with floral Art Nouveau garlands.
Base: Both vases rest on their original round feet of light-colored marble.
Height: 22 cm Weight: 2.5 kg.
Period: Late 19th century (ca. 1890).
Condition: In beautiful, authentic antique condition with a wonderfully patinated patina that gives the vases their character. No cracks in the bronze or in the marble.
Maker: Virgile Morey, a French sculptor who was primarily active during the heyday of Art Nouveau (ca. 1883 – 1895).
The Design: The vase shows a graceful, winged cherub/putto clinging to the neck of the vase, surrounded by floral motifs and branches.
