Founded in 1759 by Josiah Wedgwood, the company became a pioneer in porcelain production and Wedgwood is today considered the "father of English ceramics". The founder of the pottery was the creator of the exquisite ivory-colored earthenware coated with the finest glaze, as well as the exclusive ceramic material "Black Basalt" based on Egyptian clay.
Today Wedgwood is part of the Finnish group Fiskars, which has long ceased jewelry creation. Original Wedgwood jewelry today is found primarily on the collectibles and vintage market.
