One unique 19th‑century balance in a purple velour case, dating to ca. 1820–1870, with velour material and an antique Napoléon III style.
Description from the seller
A unique antique 19th-century balance scale in its purple velvet-lined box with its set of weights. A beam with its central needle and two pans suspended by wires. This type of instrument was used to verify the weight and authenticity of gold or silver coins of different currencies. This case generally belonged to a money changer or banker operating under the international exchange-rate system of the time, as some weights bear the names of Germanized currencies. This box was manufactured between 1820 and 1845 (during the Restoration or the July Monarchy). Several clues support this. The presence of the Louis d'or and the ducat; the Louis d'or ceased to be struck at the French Revolution and was replaced by the Napoléon in 1803, and the appearance of the krone, currencies of Germanic and Austrian origin in the early 19th century. As well as the rectangular case with right-angled corners covered in chagrin paper or fine dark green leather and lined with purple velvet. Several weights French currencies: LOUIDOR: (with a 2) the double Louis d’or; LOUISDOR: (generally 20 Francs Germinal/Napoléon); FRANCS: (with the number 20) the French gold Napoléon coin. Several weights German or Austrian currencies: FRDRDOR: the Frederick d’or of Prussia; KRONE: the Krone (gold); DUCAT: the ducat, a very pure gold coin heavily struck by the Austrian Empire; IMPERIAL: 1/2, this is the standard for the half-imperial Russian under Alexander II and Alexander III. Much to say about this marvel, it remains a unique sought-after piece; you can see on the case a cartridge or embedded motifs very popular under the Second Empire. Two gilded toggle clasps, and you will notice in the last photo on the reverse of the weight stamps of calibration and official verification, called control stamps of the administration, with a curved outline in the shape of a shield and heraldry. A rare piece for a collection, curiosity, or decoration. Fast, careful shipping with tracking and insurance.
