The fairy-tairy magical iridescent and lustring glass is revealed in the work
of the world-famous company Joh. Loetz Witwe especially in every peak of achievement,
which unite artistic design with artisanal and technical perfection.
Initially inspired by Tiffany glass, the creative forces of the Bohemian glass factory
soon found their own independence, due in large part to the Viennese design.

Joh. Loetz Witwe
(also Johan Lötz Witwe) was a renowned art glass manufacturer in Klostermühle, Bohemia. Loetz works are among the outstanding examples of Jugendstil. In the Wottawattal of the Bohemian Forest lay one of the oldest glass works, which in 1850 was purchased by Johann Lötz, the founder of the company, a former owner of the glass factories Deffernik, Hurkental, Annatal and Vogelsang. In 1879 Max Ritter von Spaun, a grandson of Joh. Lötz, took over the factory from his grandmother and continued it under the old company name "Joh. Lötz Witwe." Similar to Louis Comfort Tiffany’s glass, Loetz glasses could be produced in the phenomenon-decor with metallized iridescent color glasses at a very high level. The company had connections with other manufacturers such as J. & L. Lobmeyr and E. Bakalowits Söhne in Vienna as well as the Argentor-Werke. Notable artists they worked with included Josef Hoffmann, Koloman Moser, and the Vienna Workshop. The peak of collaboration occurred after 1900. The company was awarded at the Paris World’s Fair and received honors in Chicago and St. Louis. Jugendstil works by Joh. Loetz Witwe are found in several museums and fetch high prices at auctions.

Ancient rare slender-form typical Loetz glass vase from the Jugendstil founding period around 1900!
Beautiful classic vase form, crystal clear glass in Papillon decor, the shimmering oil-spot granules formed
from melted silver, gold, blue glossy glass splinters, which dreamily shimmer.
On the bottom there is a round fine typical Lötz break. Under another light – its color and its irresistible shine change!
Papillon – one of the most common Loetz decors! It is a wonderful technique,
that Loetz developed and aptly named as "Candia Papillon" or "Amber Spotted Butterfly Wings"
and by some collectors referred to as the "Oil Spot" decoration.
The quality of this glass is comparable
to L.C.T. Tiffany Favrile and Steuben Glass from New York. These three competed strongly around the turn of the century for the Jugendstil glass market in the USA.
Papillon decor was then a major discovery and news from Lötz
and caused a sensation in the world of glass.
An exceptionally beautiful design and fantastic eye-catcher
for any collection or a modern ambiance!

Large: Height 18 cm, Diameter: top 3.5 cm, bottom 4.5 cm
Condition: Used in good condition, undamaged - with small signs of aging. Bottom scratched.
