Original mosasaur jaw fragment of the species Eremiasaurus Heterodontus from the Late Cretaceous (100.5–66 Ma) Morocco, reconassembled, dimensions 10.5 by 14 cm.
Description from the seller
In this lot, a mosasaur jaw of good size (10.5 x 14 cm) from the species Eremiasaurus Heterodontus is up for auction. Very well preserved, repaired. It is a very interesting jaw fragment; “it impresses when you hold it in your hands.” It comes from phosphate mines (main quarries Oued Zem, Sidi Daoui and Sidi Chennane) in the Abdoun Ouled basin of Khouribga Province (Morocco). Oulad Abdoun is the largest fossil phosphate basin, and the northernmost of Morocco’s main phosphate basins. The phosphate deposits have preserved a large number of vertebrate fossils from Late Cretaceous to Eocene times. The fossils include a diversity of marine and terrestrial animals, such as mosasaurs, plesiosaurs, pterosaurs, crocodiles, elasmobranchs, and dinosaurs. Each mosasaur species has a tooth type that is easily recognizable; in this species and, as its name indicates, the most distinctive feature is heterodonty throughout the jaw, with the front teeth being somewhat more conical and narrow compared to the rear teeth, which are flatter and wider with well-developed carinae, generally a more slender dentition than other large mosasaurs. A very aesthetic piece, a good fossil, “the perfect gift.” “Comes with a matching L-shaped acrylic display stand for gifting.”
