Sound quality

This is where the KX-780 stands out.

Compared with normal 2-head decks:

better recordings
more accurate monitoring
cleaner high frequencies
stronger stereo imaging

Period lab reviews praised:

extremely flat playback response
very good Dolby implementation
high-quality transport control system.

Among vintage cassette users today, Kenwood decks from this era are generally viewed as:

reliable when serviced
underrated compared with Nakamichi or Pioneer
excellent value for money.

The KX-780 is:

uncommon
not ultra rare
increasingly harder to find in fully working condition

Good examples are becoming collectible because:

many decks now need belts/service
3-head decks are more desirable
fewer surviving units remain fully original

Collectors usually rank it:

above average Kenwood decks
below top-tier Nakamichi Dragon / ZX series
but definitely a “serious” vintage cassette machine.
