Description from the seller
Bronze Byzantine brooch with relief vegetal decoration — 6th–7th centuries CE.
Culture: Byzantine or Byzantine-influenced.
Dating proposed: 6th–7th centuries CE.
Material: Casting bronze.
Dimensions: 22 × 48 × 10 mm.
Exceptionally decorative belt buckle plate of Byzantine tradition, made of bronze and characterized by its elegant elongated silhouette and its elaborate ornamentation of relief vegetal motifs and volutes.
The piece features a body with slightly concave sides, terminated at one end by a small triangular appendage. Its frontal surface is richly decorated with a composition of spirals, scrolls and interlaced circular motifs, framed by two delicate lateral friezes.
Of special interest is the reverse, which preserves two perforated loops intended for securing the plate to the leather of the belt, testimony to its functional construction.
This type of belt fittings represents an interesting manifestation of Late Antiquity metalwork and the early medieval centuries, when Byzantine artistic influence spread widely across the Mediterranean.
A particularly striking feature is its attractive archaeological patina, with olive green, dark bronze and earthy golden tones that enhance the depth of the ornamental motifs.
Conservation status: Good apparent structural integrity, with the decorated plate and the two rear loops preserved. Displays surface wear and earthy deposits compatible with its archaeological state. It does not retain the ring or the pin of the buckle.
An attractive mid-to-late medieval archaeological piece, especially valued for the richness of its decorative motifs, the elegance of its design, and the preservation of its original fastening elements."} } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } }
