Antique 17th‑century hand‑formed yellow glazed plavuis (estrik) floor tile from Dutch/Flemish interiors of the Golden Age, measuring 21.8 × 21.5 × 3.1 cm and weighing 2515 g, in excellent condition.
Description from the seller
This is a glazed floor tile (plavuis/estrik) from the 17th century. This type of antique floor tile is historically very characteristic of Dutch and Flemish interiors from that period.
Characteristics of this tile:
Dimensions: (l x w x h) 21.8 x 21.5 x 3.1 cm
Craquelure: The fine network of hairline cracks in the glaze is typical of the age of the pottery. This arises from the tension between the shrinkage of the clay and the glaze layer during cooling and from the wear of time.
Lead glaze: The warm, honey- to ochre-colored tone was achieved in the 17th century by applying a transparent or colored lead glaze over the red-burning clay.
Hand-formed: The somewhat irregular shape and thickness, as well as the small firing flaws or edge imperfections, clearly show the artisanal, manual production process.
This type of tiles was widely used in the Golden Age in corridors, kitchens and stoves of both urban houses and farms.
Shipping method: the tile is excellently packaged and shipped via DHL or UPS through Catawiki’s smart shipping program.
