Description from the seller
Triple distributor of horse bridle straps in bronze with traces of gilding – Late Roman period
Culture: Late Roman,
Proposed dating: 3rd–5th centuries AD
Material: Bronze with possible gilding remnants.
Dimensions: 40 × 50 × 6 mm.
Magnificent and singular triple bronze strap distributor, probably belonging to an ancient horse harness, characterized by its ingenious articulated construction and its three ornamental terminals with striking traces of gilded finish.
The piece presents a solid central ring of circular profile, to which three radial fastening elements are joined, forming an elegant triangular composition.
Each terminal ends in a rounded-edged plate, decorated with three small hemispherical-headed rivets. The surfaces preserve significant areas with a gilded hue, which could correspond to remnants of an old ornamental coating.
This type of distributor was used to connect several leather straps, allowing stress distribution and facilitating the articulation of the different elements that made up the horse tack.
During the Roman Empire, equestrian equipment reached a notable degree of technical and ornamental sophistication, especially in fittings intended for riding horses and animals used in military or ceremonial contexts.
The combination of its movable components, the symmetrical arrangement of the three terminals, and the attractive contrast between the greenish-bronze tone and the wide gilded surfaces are particularly noteworthy.
Condition: Good apparent structural integrity, with the central ring and the three terminals preserved. Shows surface wear, earthy deposits, and alterations in the metal finish.
An attractive piece of antique equestrian metalwork, especially interesting for its articulated construction, balanced design, and the possible gilding traces that greatly enhance its aesthetic presence.
