AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Ornamental element of a Visigothic bronze buckle with red and green glass inlays – 6th century AD.

Culture: Visigothic, artistic attribution.

Proposed dating: 6th century AD, approximately 525–600.

Material: Copper alloy, probably bronze, with inlays of colored glass or garnets.

Measurements: 20 × 40 × 15 mm.

Exceptionally attractive ornamental piece of possible Visigothic buckle, characterized by its refined polychrome decoration and the preservation of numerous inlays in deep red and translucent green.

The piece features a semicircular head divided into small geometric compartments by fine metallic walls, following the tradition of cloisonné decoration techniques.

At its center stands a striking convex green inlay, arranged in a diamond position, around which a symmetrical composition of small reddish elements is organized, possibly glass or faceted garnets.

The color combination is one of the most characteristic elements of Visigothic metalwork of the sixth century, especially valued in buckles, fibulae, and other prestigious personal adornments.

The decorative head extends into a slightly curved metallic stem, whose configuration suggests its belonging to an old fastening or securing element.

Particularly notable is the good preservation of much of its original inlays and the attractive metal surface, with an olive-green patina and earthy deposits that contrast with the intense colors of its decoration.

Condition: Visually good, with most of the polychrome decoration preserved. Visible cracks in some inlays, surface wear, and archaeological concretion.

An interesting example of early medieval goldsmithing, especially attractive for its polychromy, its delicate ornamental compartments, and its stylistic linkage with the artistic traditions of the Visigothic kingdom.
