The Leopard 2 is a battle tank of German production. It has been mass-produced since 1978 and is the successor to the Leopard 1. In the long production period, various optional retrofit options and specifications for foreign buyers were created. Therefore there is a wide variety of Leopard 2 variants. It is produced wholly or partly abroad under license. For the manufacturer KNDS Germany (formerly Krauss-Maffei Wegmann) it is a commercial success with around 3600 built units. By the year 2008 the Bundeswehr had reduced its active Leopard 2 inventory from 2125 units in 1990 to 328 units.

The Leopard-2 tank was originally conceived as the backbone of armored forces and to defend against enemy tank formations.
