Description from the seller
Ancient Russian icon "Theotokos Pokrov" from the 19th century.
Hand-painted on a wooden panel with egg tempera on a chalk ground and a gold ground. A typical method of icon painting in 18th- and 19th-century Tsarist Russia.
The motif is widespread and very popular in the Orthodox Church.
This is an Old Believer icon. The painting is rendered in quite detailed fashion (see photos).
Perfectly coordinated color contrasts and successful shading.
The painting contains very authentic craquelure (see photos). Partial restorations are present (see photos).
Particularly expressive and striking are the faces of the saints (see photos). The saints are inscribed. The inscriptions are easily readable.
The icon likely originated around 1850–1880 in Central Russia. On the back, both crossbars are missing (see photo). Stable and solid wooden panel. The icon is in good condition with typical signs of age wear (see photos).
On the back of the icon is the assessment by the Icon Museum in Recklinghausen (see photos).
All details are clearly visible in the photos. The photos are part of the description.
Dimensions: 31x26.5x2.5 cm
