Description from the seller
Jar for ointments in Murano blown glass
Technique: excavation
Master Glassmaker: Paolo Rossi
Venice
Italy
Second half of the 20th century
Measurements: 9 cm x 6 cm
Weight: 123 g
Description:
This decorative jar (or small balsamic cruet) is a Murano work of art crafted by the renowned master glassmaker Paolo Rossi, dating from the late 20th century.
The piece stands out for the following artistic and technical characteristics:
• Style and Technique "Excavation": The most relevant element is the metallized and iridescent surface finish. This specific Murano technique, aptly called "excavation," was developed to imitate ancient Roman or Phoenician glass recovered from archaeological digs. The deliberately matte, eroded, and patinated appearance recreates the aging effect and chemical wear on historical artifacts.
• Form and Structure: The object echoes the shapes of classical balsamaria or ampullae from antiquity, used to contain perfumes, ointments, or essential oils. It features a bulbous, globular lower body, a cylindrical neck enhanced by a decorative relief ring (band) at mid-height, and a flared funnel mouth. On the side, a small, warmly attached loop handle is heat-applied, functional and graceful.
• Color: It is made of mouth-blown glass in a vivid bright green hue, enriched with iridescent, golden, and silver shades produced by the interaction of metallic salts on the surface with the furnace heat.
This is a refined collectible item that combines the mastery of the Venetian nineteenth- and twentieth-century tradition with the timeless charm of glass archaeology.
In good condition, no parts missing.
