Description from the seller
RARE KYATHOS ETRUSQUE EN IMPASTO
Etruscan kyathos for drinking, made of black paste ceramic of the “impasto” type with thin walls and a tall, raised handle, resting on a footed base.
Splendid Etruscan cup or kyathos dating to the 9th century BC, from the Villanova culture, in brown/black terra-cotta (bucchero brown). It features a raised handle adorned with grooves.
The belly, mid-height carinated, is decorated with oblique incised lines. The vertical, pierced handle, reinforced at its base by a rib, is topped by a high knop.
Terra cotta blackware called “impasto,” which formed the first bucchero nero wares. Because of the rusticity of the clay used, impasto pottery is thrown without a wheel, a technique that would appear only around the 8th/7th century BC.
Etruria, Villanova culture, 9th century BC.
Height 15.3 cm - Width 14.5 cm - Excellent condition - restoration to the handle
