Description from the seller
Idol of steatopygia, Tell Halaf culture, Mesopotamia.
Fertility figurine in terracotta representing a seated woman, with breasts uniquely button-shaped, voluptuous thighs and broad hips, symbols of her fertility.
The figurine is slightly bent forward, the bent arms resting delicately on the knees.
Its minimalist head features a thick neck and a flat, pinched high face, characteristics of abstract figures from this region. Traces of brown or black pigment remain around the neck, waist, and hands.
The body is girded by two crossed straps.
Mesopotamian art, Halaf culture, 6000–5100 BC.
This figurine is characteristic of an era when goddesses are most often depicted with physical features that emphasize the idea of motherhood, in a very naturalistic style, with the breasts on display and the pelvis particularly developed.
Mesopotamia, cradle of Western civilization, produced many beautiful mother-goddess figurines over seven thousand years ago.
Dimensions: height 6.7 cm (total height of the figurine 8.9 cm) - Width 4.3 cm
Statue in very good condition – restoration at the neck
Provenance: Netherlands, D.Z.N. gallery
