Description from the seller
12x Antique 1st-grade silver Apostle spoons, a unique complete set, arriving in a matching case (J.R. Jedeloo, The Hague).
Spoon length 9 cm.
Net silver weight 104 g.
Case dimensions 25.3 cm x 13.5 cm.
Total weight including case 446 g.
Silver marks:
The 18th-century silver master mark VB from Deventer is the mark of silversmith Willem Brandenburg (in historical sources also referred to as W. Brandenburg or sometimes initiated as WB/VB, since the letters 'V' and 'W' or 'V' and 'B' in old stamps sometimes overlap or can be read as 'V' due to engraving methods).
He was a master silversmith active in Deventer from 1742 to 1797.
City mark: The Deventer Eagle (the German Imperial Eagle, since Deventer was a historic free imperial city).
However, the spoons were also marked with RS2 (where the S has become illegible due to wear), which is the official master mark of R. Scheltens from Groningen (active late 19th century).
He was known for making high-quality Apostle spoons with pseudo-marks of 18th-century smiths to satisfy the great historical demand.
These Apostle spoons do not date from the 18th century, but they are a very fine, high-quality 19th-century replica set and therefore have historical value.
One spoon has only the RS2 mark.
The spoons are in good condition.
The case shows signs of use on the outside; otherwise it is fine.
Will be packed carefully and securely.
Registered/insured shipping.
Fast shipping, but pickup is also possible.
