Background Information:
This bronze coin is attributed to Diocletian, Roman emperor from A.D. 284 to 305. The obverse legend IMP C C VAL DIOCLETIANVS AVG identifies the ruler as Imperator Caesar Gaius Valerius Diocletianus Augustus. His reign marked a fundamental period of political, military and administrative reorganisation following the instability of the 3rd century.
The reverse bears the legend CONCORDIA MILITVM, meaning “harmony of the soldiers”. The type emphasised unity between the emperor and the Roman army, whose loyalty remained fundamental to imperial authority. This message was particularly relevant during the Tetrarchic period, when Diocletian reorganised imperial government around several cooperating rulers in an effort to improve stability and defence.
Coins of this period were manufactured within the highly organised Roman imperial minting system and circulated widely throughout the provinces. Beyond their everyday monetary function, their portraits, titles and reverse designs communicated official political messages to soldiers and civilians across the Roman world.
Dating to the late 3rd or early 4th century A.D., this coin belongs to a decisive period in the transformation of the Roman Empire. As an object produced for everyday circulation, it forms a tangible connection to the monetary, military and political life of Late Roman society."
