Description from the seller
An antique Austrian silver sugar box made in Vienna in 1862, during the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I.
The box is made of 13-loth silver (812.5/1000) and is a fine example of Austrian Biedermeier silverwork.
It has an elegant oval shape, a gently curved body with broad fluted sections on the shorter sides, and a closely fitted hinged lid with a softly scalloped outline. The decoration is restrained, emphasising the proportions and craftsmanship of the piece.
The front features the original keyhole and locking mechanism. The original key is missing.
The silver hallmarks are located on the back of the box, just below the upper edge. They include the Austrian assay mark for 13-loth silver, the Vienna assay office designation and the year 1862, together with the silversmith's initials CSS.
The sugar box measures 16 cm in width, 13 cm in depth and 8.5 cm in height, with a total silver weight of 389 grams.
It is preserved in very good antique condition, with natural signs of age and use consistent with its age of more than 160 years.
The piece comes from a private family collection in Poland and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity
