Banco Español del Río de la Plata, Primera de Cambio with a nominal value of 79.15 pesetas, issued in Mendoza in 1906, ungraded.
Description from the seller
This splendid vintage document is a "Primera de Cambio" (banker's bill of exchange) historically issued by the Mendoza branch of the Banco Español del Río de la Plata (Argentina) dated July 22, 1916. It is a very important piece of financial and banking history (scripophily) tied to the Atlantic trade and migrant routes between Argentina and Spain at the beginning of the twentieth century.
#Description and analysis of the document
* The Issuing Institution: The Banco Español del Río de la Plata was one of the largest financial institutions in Latin America, founded in Buenos Aires in 1886 to manage remittances and capital of the enormous community of Spanish immigrants.
* The Transaction Content: The title, stamped with the serial number 520, orders payment "Upon demand" of the sum of One Hundred Pesetas (100 pesetas, the old Spanish currency) in favor of Doña Manuela Sanjurjo Valle.
* The Value Received: The payment occurs against the value received from "La Viuda e hijos de Alvaro Guira" (The widow and children of Alvaro Guira), indicating a family or commercial transaction related to an inheritance or a protected remittance.
* Foreign Correspondence: On the left margin is printed the red stamp indicating the back-up bank for collection in Spain: the Banco Español del Río de la Plata located at Alcalá 23 in Madrid and at the [La Coruña] branch (Galicia, the region from which the vast majority of migrants to Argentina originated).
* Endorsements and Endorsement Travel: The front bears the autograph signatures of the directors and the cashiers of the Mendoza branch of the era. The back of the letter (second and third photos) shows the travel endorsement for receipt ("Recibì") by an intermediary or final beneficiary, Mr. Marino Miranda.
1. The firm "Viuda e hijos de Alvaro": Represents the typical model of a family business or patrimonial succession at the beginning of the century, common in Argentine provinces rich in vineyards and trade like Mendoza.
2. The Kraft, Buenos Aires printing house: The title reads at the top center "Guillermo Kraft, Buenos Aires". This is the signature of one of the most prestigious printing and engraving houses in Argentina, famous for the artistic quality of its watermarks, sepia-toned decorative borders, and emblems that protected credit titles from counterfeiting.
In the vintage paper collectibles market, scripophily and postal history, this document is presented in excellent condition, with intact paper, unmutilated edges, and clear, non-faded calligraphic inks.
* Price determinants: The combination of the internal Argentine branch ([Mendoza]), the double destination stamp in Spain (Madrid/La Coruña), and the presence of Kraft’s typographic mark make the item highly appealing to collectors of Ibero-American banking history.
