Description from the seller

Antique Historicism Drinking Cup / Waldglas with Coat of Arms and Drinking Motto – Germany/Bohemia, ca. 1880–1900

Rare antique German Historicism drinking cup of olive-green 'Waldglas', equipped with enamel decoration featuring a heraldic family coat of arms, spiral wire application, and a distinctive drinking motto.

Description
An imposing and refined antique drinking cup produced in the heyday of German Historicism (last quarter of the 19th century). This piece stylistically pays homage to the rich drinking culture and glassblowing traditions of the late Renaissance and early Baroque (16th/17th centuries).

The cup is mouth-blown from olive-green/rose-coloured tinted glass, inspired by the historic German Waldglas. The conical midsection is spirally studded around with a fine, ribbed glass thread application (gerippter Glasfaden). This technique historically served not only as decoration but also provided extra grip at the table. The foot features a beautifully turned stand ring with a pinched, scalloped glass rib (Bandauflage).

Enamel decoration & inscription:

On the front, the glass is rendered in polychrome enamel with the humorous, Gothic drinking motto:

“Solcher Tropf, Kost letzten Knopf”

(A nod to the exuberant revelry: whoever savors such good drink even loses his last button/cent).

The reverse shows a detailed heraldic shield with helm, crown, and elaborate orange-white mantling. The rim is finished with a gilded edge.

Glassware of this high level and with this theme was produced around 1880–1900 by renowned workshops such as Theresienthal (Bavaria) and Fritz Heckert (Silesia/Bohemia).
