Lot Title: USA 1861-1889 - Exceptional Archive of Postal History of the Regal-Demmon Family (7 Covers) - Includes Rare Fancy Cancels and Civil War Period

Description:
Splendid and coherent lot of 7 vintage United States covers, constituting the epistolary archive of the family of Reverend Eli Regal and son-in-law, the well-known Professor Isaac Newton Demmon. The lot spans three decades of American history, from the Civil War (1861) to the end of the 19th century (1889), with an extraordinary variety of geometric and fancy cancellations (fancy cancels).

The lot consists of the following 7 covers ordered chronologically:

• September 1861 (Beginning of the Civil War) – Sent from Ypsilanti (Mich.) to Ionia (Mich.), addressed to Pastor Elder Eli Regal by his daughter Ellen. 3¢ pink stamp (Scott #65) with a clear concentric circle geometric cancel (Target cancel). Era handwritten notes on the front.

• November 1864 (Mid-Civil War) – Sent from Kendallville (Ind.) to Indianapolis, addressed to Union young soldier Isaac N. Demmon. 3¢ pink stamp (Scott #65) obliterated by a rarissime and spectacular Fancy Cancel in the shape of a Maltese Cross / 4-point star. Handwritten note "Rec'd Nov 3rd/64 From Olivia".

• August 1865 (End of Civil War / Reconstruction) – Addressed to I. N. Demmon in Kendallville (Ind.). Features the rare and sought-after post-war transitional mark "KANAWHA C.H. VA" (now Charleston, West Virginia), used when the locality was already part of the newly formed West Virginia but the post office still used the old Virginia dies. 3¢ pink stamp (Scott #65). Receipt note "Recd Aug 25th / 65".

• August 1869 – Sent from Detroit (Mich.) to Braddock's Field (Penn.), signed on the front by the young Emma Regal and addressed to her father Eli. Franked with the sought-after 3¢ blue of 1869 with Locomotive (Steam Engine) (Scott #114) featuring a grill (G Grill). The stamp shows a strong centering variety (right edge perforation). Barred geometric cancel.

• January 1871 (Engagement Letter) – Sent from Hiram (Ohio) to Ypsilanti (Mich.), addressed to Miss Emma Regal by her fiancé Isaac Demmon a few months before the wedding. 3¢ green stamp (Bank Note Issue). The gem of the lot: the stamp is a right margin imperforate and is cancelled by an extraordinary and crisp Fancy Cancel speaking with the word "PAID" carved into the cork.

• Early 1870s – Sent from Ypsilanti (Mich.) to Hiram (Ohio), addressed to Emma after the marriage (Mrs. I. N. Demmon). 3¢ green stamp (Bank Note Issue). Features a spectacular coordinated Fancy Cancel: a black canceler in the shape of the letter "Y" printed over the stamp, paired with the Ypsilanti city stamp.

• April 1889 – Sent from Tennessee (Tenn.) to Ann Arbor (Mich.), addressed to sister Mrs. Ellen Regal Davis. 2¢ green stamp (Scott #213). Excellent postal combination: includes the origin postmark on the front and a magnificent, crystal-clear circular postmark on the back: "ANN ARBOR MICH. REC'D APR 23 89".

Condition: Excellent overall for vintage items, the stamps are printed clearly and the fronts are clean and legible. A lot of great significance for collectors of American postal history and fancy cancels.
