About François Pompon
François Pompon (1855-1933) is one of the great French figures of modern animal sculpture.
After having worked notably with Auguste Rodin and Camille Claudel, he gradually develops a very personal language, based on the simplification of volumes, the softness of the curves and the removal of superfluous details.
From the early 20th century, Pompon primarily dedicates himself to representing animals. He observes animals notably at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris and seeks less to reproduce their anatomy in every detail than to capture movement, silhouette and essence.
His consecration comes at the Salon d’Automne of 1922, where his monumental White Bear meets with immense success. This work has become one of the most emblematic animal sculptures of the 20th century and one of the masterpieces of the Musée d’Orsay’s collections.
With its smooth surfaces and its powerful, simplified forms, Pompon’s work holds a special place in the history of modern sculpture, between Rodin’s tradition and the more radical explorations of Brancusi.
