AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Bronze enameled Roman pendant in red with three blue circular appliqués – 2nd–3rd centuries AD.

Culture: Roman.

Reference period: Roman Empire, 2nd–3rd centuries AD.

Material: Bronze with red enamel decoration and blue-toned appliqués.

Dimensions: 38 × 21 mm.

Auction description:

Extraordinary bronze ornamental pendant of Roman tradition, characterized by its elegant triangular silhouette ending in a point and its striking polychrome decoration.

The front surface preserves an extensive application of dark red enamel, featuring three blue circular elements, distributed symmetrically: two at the top and one in the lower center.

This peculiar arrangement creates a composition with strong visual expressiveness that evokes a stylized mask, combining geometry and color in a design of notable artistic personality.

The piece presents a solid cast-bronze frame, with a top suspension ring and a plain reverse. The use of enamels in different colors constitutes one of the most attractive expressions of Roman world small-scale metalwork ornamental art.

Particularly noteworthy is the preservation of the red surface, which contrasts with the three blue elements and the beautiful dark green bronze patina.

The small enameled pendants were part of the Roman decorative repertoire, both in personal adornments and in elements of equestrian accoutrements.

Condition: Very attractive, with preserved suspension ring, significant presence of red enamel, three blue circular elements and old patina with surface deposits. Wear and minor alterations typical of its conservation state.
