Terracotta Mingqi Lokapala (Heavenly Guardian), a male figure in armour with dragon-head shoulder plates and a pointed helmet, 40 cm high, 8 cm deep, 7 cm wide, weighing 1.3 kg, dating to 1940–1950, in good condition with signs of aging.
Description from the seller
An impressive and powerfully designed earthenware tomb statue (Mingqi) representing a Lokapala (Heavenly Protector or Gatekeeper).
The figure stands in a proud, imposing stance with hands on hips (Akimbo) on a small platform.
It wears detailed military armor with pronounced shoulder plates in the shape of mythological monster heads (龍首 - dragon heads) and a traditional helmet with a pointed crest.
His facial expression is expressive with furrowed brows and widely opened eyes, intended to ward off evil spirits.
Condition:
Good condition with characteristic aging signs. The statue shows authentically aged wear around, craquelure, light erosion of surface details and substantial residues of lime and earth coating that give the object an archaeological appearance.
There is an old, stable crack line/seam visible at the neck (the heads of this type of statue were cast separately at the time and later assembled, which often leads to cracking). See last photo.
The construction is further solid.
Dimensions:
Height: 40 cm
Width: 18 cm
Depth: 7 cm
Weight: 1.3 kg.
The lot is packed with utmost care and shipped registered and insured with track & trace.
Pickup is also possible by arrangement.
