Antieke faïence jatte of saladier uit Nevers – vermoedelijk 18e eeuw, met maritiem decor - Platter - Earthenware - Antique shaving bowls

Antique Nevers faience jatte or saladier – believed to be from the 18th century, with a maritime decor

Rare antique French faience jatte, also called a saladier, probably originating from Nevers and dating to the 18th century. This characteristic bowl is crafted in polychrome glazed earthenware and features a graceful sailing ship at its center, possibly inspired by river traffic on the Loire.

The nautical scene is framed by decorative yellow-and-blue borders and fine brushwork accents. The glaze shows a lovely natural crazing that gives the dish extra character and older appearance. The combination of vivid colors, the ship motif, and the typical French faience form makes this an attractive collectible.

This type of dish is often referred to as a jatte or saladier à décor de marine. The shape was suitable for use as a slakom or serving dish, but such pieces are nowadays mainly valued as decorative antique faience. The maritime decor and distinctive style are characteristic of Nevers faiencerie art.
