Manuscript signed by Emilio Castelar, President of the First Spanish Republic, dated 1873, an original period document complete with seals, measuring 22 x 32.5 cm and consisting of 2 pages, in well-preserved condition.
Description from the seller
Emilio Castelar, President of the First Spanish Republic, 1873.
Period of maximum documentary scarcity: Castelar's term as President lasted barely four months (from September 7, 1873 to January 3, 1874, when General Pavía's coup dissolved the Cortes). Finding official documents signed by him in his capacity as head of state is very rare.
Emilio Castelar y Ripoll (1832–1899) was one of the most brilliant politicians, writers, and intellectuals in 19th-century Spain. A great parliamentary orator, leader of historical republicanism, and President of the First Republic (September 1873 – January 1874): He assumed the leadership of the State and government at the most critical moment in nineteenth-century history: the cantonal insurrection draining the Levante and the south, the Ten Years’ War in Cuba, and the Third Carlist War intensifying in the north. To save the Republic, he adopted firm measures, reestablished military discipline in the army, and governed by decree with extraordinary powers under his famous motto: “Order, authority, and liberty.”
The document is also signed by the Minister of War, José Sánchez Bregua (general and liberal-republican politician). Beautiful dry seal from the Ministry of War and blue ink seal of the Presidency of the Executive Power (I Republic).
Official Executive document of the Nation’s Executive Power granting the Grand Cross of the Royal and Military Order of Military Merit with red distinguishing insignia (reward for “war services”) to Don Antonio Fernández Morales, in the capacity of Army Brigadier. It is expressly granted for his actions in the “Sanaiz action against the Carlist factions on the twelfth of April last” (1873), in the context of the Third Carlist War in northern Spain.
Original period document, complete and in excellent condition.
A precious piece of collection and Spanish history.
Excellent piece with no reserve price. Great opportunity.
