Rated Excellent on Trustpilot.
Impressive monumental Art Deco ear vase designed by Gerardus (Gé) Klinkenberg, circa 1930–1940, in red-baking river clay with a triple-arch ear, glazed with a flowing drip glaze from chocolate brown to ice blue/mint and a dark upper edge, 25 cm high, 20 cm wide, 14 cm deep, weighing 1306 g, produced by Aardewerkfabriek Katwijk/Klinkenberg Zeist in the Netherlands, in vintage good condition with a small chip on the foot.
Description from the seller
Beautiful and rare monumental Art Deco jewelry ceramic earring vase (pul), designed by the well-known Dutch potter Gerardus (Gé) Klinkenberg.
This specific model was produced around the transitional period (circa 1930) when Klinkenberg moved his earthenware factory from Katwijk aan Zee to Zeist.
Features & Design:
The vase features an extremely elegant, organically designed triple-arched or winged ear, typical of Klinkenberg’s innovative form language. The cup flows through a slim waist into a stable, bulbous hourglass foot.
Glaze technique:
The vase is finished with a rich and thick flowing glaze (drip glaze). The color palette is very characteristic for this studio: a deep chocolate brown base that overflows via a soft ice-blue/mint-green intermediate tone into a charcoal gray upper edge with vertical drip traces. Because the glaze found its own path in the kiln, the pattern on this piece is unique.
Condition and authenticity:
As is typical for this specific jewelry ceramic series, the vase is unsigned on the underside. However, the bottom directly reveals the artisanal origin: the rough finish of the base ring and the thick foamy glaze apophyses (drip/foamy effect) formed during the firing process are the ultimate proof of authentic, early 20th-century craftsmanship.
The vase is in beautiful vintage condition without restorations.
Note: On the foot there is one chip where brown enamel is missing. When the vase is standing with the ear to the left, it is very minimally visible. See last photo.
Otherwise the vase is in near-new condition.
A stunning and collectible piece of Dutch design history!
Vase will be carefully packed and shipped.
