Description from the seller
3-Light Adjustable Space Age Pendant Lamp – 1970s
Italy in the 1960s and 1970s was one of the leading centres of Space Age design. Lighting from this period was characterised by futuristic rounded forms, innovative use of plastics, bold colours and sculptural shapes. Italian designers and manufacturers played an important role in establishing this distinctive aesthetic and strongly influenced European interior design of the era.
A particularly interesting Central European expression of this international Space Age design language is this three-light Szarvasi pendant lamp from the 1970s, manufactured in Hungary by Szarvasi Vas-Fémipari Szövetkezet.
In this piece, the Hungarian and Italian connections meet not only stylistically. The lamp's suspension and height-adjustment construction also contains marked components of Italian manufacture. This is a particularly interesting detail in an object whose visual language is closely connected to the international – and especially Italian – Space Age aesthetic of the 1970s.
The character of the lamp is defined by three large, rounded orange/amber shades, combined with a dark brown metal structure and distinctive curved supporting arms. The combination of soft, rounded forms and warm translucent colours gives the lamp a striking, almost sculptural presence from every angle.
The lamp truly reveals its character when illuminated: the three shades become filled with a warm amber glow, creating a distinctive and atmospheric light. Even when switched off, however, the lamp retains a strong visual presence as a decorative design object in its own right.
Particularly noteworthy is the original spring-loaded, height-adjustable suspension mechanism. It allows the hanging height of the lamp to be adjusted, while the mechanism itself forms an integral part of its characteristic 1970s appearance. The original dark brown ceiling canopy has also been preserved.
The lamp therefore represents an intriguing meeting point between the European design language shaped by Italian Space Age aesthetics, Italian mechanical components and Hungarian industrial design.
