A handmade cotton lace border from the late 19th century, in antique Renaissance style, measuring 6.80 m long and 14 cm high, produced in Italy and in pristine condition.
Description from the seller
Rare and long hand-made Bobbin Lace (pillow lace) – Late 19th Century (Late '800) – 6.80 m x 14 cm
Magnificent and elegant decorative border in authentic bobbin lace (pizzo a fuselli), entirely handmade by skilled artisans in the second half of the 19th century (Late '800).
The piece stands out for its impressive height of 14 cm (high frill) and for a refined geometric and stylized floral motif. The weave is enriched with hatching areas and clocked (semi-filled) points that give extraordinary depth and stability to the design. The lower edge is beautifully finished with a scalloped profile of garlands, while the right end still preserves the original filigreed fringe characteristics resulting from the closure of the piece.
The exceptional and extremely rare feature of this lot is its extraordinary continuous length of 6 meters and 80 centimeters, kept in a single piece without cuts or subsequent joins. A generous and substantial measure like this testifies to its original prestigious purpose, such as the frill for a rich bridal trousseau of the era, a monumental tablecloth for parading, or an important altar vestment.
The thread used is an excellent late 19th-century spun cotton, characterized by splendid regularity and a soft, opaque feel to the touch, which allowed the stitches to be preserved masterfully over more than a century.
Condition:
The lace appears in splendid and flawless condition, comparable to new. The structure of the stitches is perfectly firm and the integrity of the continuous length is fully preserved. The piece is entirely free of halos, damp stains, tears, or pulled threads. Such a clean and pristine preservation for a late 19th-century textile is extraordinarily rare and significantly enhances its collectible value.
A museum piece for collectors of antique textiles, lovers of textile modern art, or for exclusive high-tailoring projects and philological restoration.
