A 41 cm diameter stoneware wall plate from the Dutch Delft maker De Porceleyne Fles, dating to 1968 and attributed to designer Paulus Moreelse, in excellent condition with hand-painted details and a cobalt-blue palette.
Description from the seller
An exceptionally artistically designed wall plate from the venerable Dutch manufactory De Porceleyne Fles of Delft, whose enchanting portrait of a young princess brings to life the elegance and courtly splendor of the 17th century. The portrayal is based on a painting by the Dutch portrait painter Paulus Moreelse (1571–1638), who is especially known for his sensitive portraits within the milieu of Dutch nobility. The girl wears a magnificent historic gown with richly embroidered fabrics, elaborate lace trims, and an impressive, fan-shaped collar. A pearl necklace, delicate earrings, and precious jewelry underscore her noble appearance.
Particularly fascinating is the extraordinary fineness of the hand-painted details, ranging from the delicate facial features to the filigree lace patterns and the elaborately designed fabric structures. Only through the artistic gradient of different cobalt blue tones does a remarkable painterly depth emerge, giving the portrait an almost three-dimensional effect. Surrounding the depiction is a splendid floral border, whose lively flower and leaf motifs harmoniously accompany the gently undulating edge of the plate.
The back carries the De Porceleyne Fles factory mark and the handwritten annotations documenting the origin from the famous Delft ceramic tradition. An older inventory sticker bears the designation “9532 – Moreelse – Kleine Prinzessin” and refers to the historical Vorlage. An impressive collectible that fuses the masterful portrait painting of the Dutch Golden Age with the tradition-rich art of Delftware.
The item is wrapped in padding foil and enclosed in bio-foam, then shipped in a double-walled carton by DHL.
