Description from the seller

COLLECTION OF NINE BRONZE MEDIEVAL THIMBLES – SIXTEENTH–SEVENTEENTH CENTURIES – LATE MIDDLE AGES

Period: medieval.

Proposed dating: 16th–17th centuries A.D.

Material: bronze and copper alloys.

An extraordinarily attractive set of ancient bronze thimbles, representative of the medieval artisanal tradition and of the tools used in sewing and textile production.

The pieces display different conical and slightly flared shapes, with surfaces carefully worked by a multitude of small circular indentations punched in to prevent the needle slipping during use.

Highlights include the variety of finishes and constructive details, with specimens featuring rounded coronets, slightly widened bases and some rims decorated with concentric lines.

Historical context

During the Middle Ages, textile production was a fundamental activity of the domestic and artisanal economy. Metal thimbles were tools used to protect the fingers during the sewing of sturdy fabrics, garments, and other textile items.

These small everyday objects constitute interesting testimonies to manual techniques and the evolution of traditional crafts.

Conservation and characteristics

The collection shows a notable variety of natural patinas, with green, brown, ochre and dark tones, as well as surface deposits and signs of use and aging.

The preservation of the characteristic punched patterns allows appreciation of the different finishes and manufacturing particularities of each specimen.

An especially attractive set for its typological homogeneity, diversity of patinas and value as a testimony to traditional craftsmanship.

Ideal for collectors of small bronzes, historical instruments, everyday objects and medieval antiques.

Sold as a set, in accordance with the photographs.
