WW1 satirical medal of the Lusitania sinking (1915/1916) by Karl Goetz, British propaganda, cast iron, approx. 55 mm diameter, in excellent condition, authentic original item from the United Kingdom.
Description from the seller
Satirical historic medal (British propaganda-era version) dedicated to the torpedoing and sinking of the British passenger liner RMS Lusitania by the German submarine U-20 in May 1915.
Originally designed by the famous German medalist Karl Goetz (signature « KG » under the obverse), this piece illustrates the controversy over weapon transport and the responsibility of the Cunard Line.
Note the date error made by Karl Goetz on the reverse (5 MAY 1915 instead of 7 May 1915). This error was exploited by British propaganda, which produced a wrought-iron replica in hundreds of thousands of copies to prove German "premeditation".
* Subject: Sinking of RMS Lusitania / World War I (1914–1918)
* Author: Karl Goetz (after the original model)
* Obverse: Death distributing tickets at the Cunard Line booth, with the inscription « GESCHÄFT ÜBER ALLES ».
* Reverse: The Lusitania sinking into the waves with the inscription « KEINE BANNWARE! » and the erroneous date « 5 MAY 1915 ».
* Material: Metal / Cast
* Diameter: approx. 55 mm
Very good condition with a beautiful original dark patina. The reliefs and the legends are perfectly legible and sharp. Please carefully review the photos to appreciate the details.
