Description from the seller
Ancient Egyptian ceremonial bronze axe with Anubis
New Kingdom, 1500-1100 B.C.
A fine Ancient Egyptian ceremonial bronze axe with an openwork blade enclosing a standing figure of Anubis, the jackal-headed god associated with mummification and the afterlife. The deity is depicted in profile, wearing a vertically striated wig and a short pleated kilt, with both arms extended towards the outer edge of the blade. The axe has a broad, straight upper edge, slightly concave sides, and a gently curved lower edge. The figure is integrated into the openwork frame, with carefully engraved details to the head, garment, and limbs.
The axe is in excavated condition, with age-related surface wear, brown and green patina, scattered encrustation, and minor surface irregularities, yet retaining its distinctive openwork design and recognisable religious imagery.
An impressive example of Egyptian ceremonial bronze work, featuring the iconic representation of Anubis, ideal for collectors of ancient Egyptian antiquities, religious artefacts, or archaeological metalwork.
