Description from the seller
- HEIGHT: 27 CM.
Devotional full-round sculpture depicting the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus in her arms, from a French school, datable by typology and treatment, dating to the 18th century. The Virgin stands, clothed in a tunic and mantle with broad folds, holding the Child on her left arm; both figures retain a serene and approachable character typical of Baroque religious imagery.
The piece is especially interesting for remaining unfinished or at an early stage of execution. The carved wood is largely bare, without the preparation, polychromy, or gilding that typically completed religious images intended for cult. You can see gouge marks and the carving planes in the drapery, while the faces, hair, and parts of the Child receive more defined modeling.
In Baroque imagery, after wood carving, layers of glue and a plaster backing were applied to regularize the support; then the flesh tones and garments were polychromed, and, when applicable, gilded and tooled. This piece preserves documentary interest by allowing observation of the sculpture before those final finishing stages.
Condition. It shows missing parts and visible damages: partial loss of a hand or arm of the Virgin, small losses at the edges of the garments and base, cracks or openings in the support, impacts, dirt, stains, overall wear, and possible signs of old interventions. It does not retain any visible original polychromy. Photographs are an essential part of the description and clearly reflect the sculpture’s real state.
Indicated for collectors of antique religious sculpture, Baroque sacred art, Spanish imagery, and restorers interested in a historical sculpture for study, conservation, or professional restoration.
