Original colour woodcut on Xuan paper by Jin Wu (金乌), titled Farbholzschnitt – Wollmispelzweig und herbstlicher wilder Wein, in the Gongbi tradition of plants and flowers from mid‑20th century China.
Description from the seller
Wollmispelzweig und herbstlicher wilder Wein (often in the context of Kachō-ga – flowers-and-birds pictures, here focusing on flora).
An elegant, finely nuanced composition that showcases the strong color contrast between the dark-green leaves and white blossoms of a loquat (Biwa) and the filigree, climbing, intensely pink-red autumn leaves of wild vine. The work is distinguished by delicate contour lines and subtle color gradients.
Artist (with life dates): Jin Wu (金乌) (historical Chinese artist/painter, active in the 20th century, known for precise and academic floral and nature renderings). The signature on the upper right reads “始興” (Shixing, origin/studio designation) followed by the artist’s signature, sealed with a red artist’s seal.
Origin: China (Republic era / early People's Republic).
Date/Period: Approximately mid-20th century (ca. 1940s to 1960s).
Style: Gongbi (工筆) – a very traditional, realistic Chinese painting style characterized by the utmost detail, fine brushwork, and academic precision (as opposed to the free Xieyi style).
Technique: Color woodblock print at manufactory level (high-quality, multi-color woodprint / Rongbaizhai style, where the colors appear painted) or fine hand-painting with ink and mineral pigments. The photo shows the pigment bleed-through on the back, which is typical for the use of traditional, thin Xuantian paper.
Material: Ink and pigments on traditional Chinese paper (Xuan paper), mounted on light mat board.
Dimensions:
Sheet (visible size): H 38.8 cm × W 25.2 cm
With frame: H 59.5 cm × W 35.5 cm
Condition
Condition of the sheet: Good to very good. The paper shows an age-appropriate, charming light browning (patina) and minimal, barely visible foxing consistent with age. No tears or major damage to the main motif visible.
Framing: Located behind UV-protective glazing in a simple, silver-gold variegated wood frame in a Mid-Century style that securely protects the work.
Safe & insured shipping: The artwork will be packed extremely carefully and shock-absorbingly for transport and shipped exclusively as an insured package with tracking.
