Description from the seller

- Large size: 60x47 centimeters.

Great religious drawing in grisaille that represents the Veil of Veronica, also known as the Holy Face: the frontal face of Christ the martyr, crowned with thorns and wrapped in a cloth or veil. The elevated gaze, the expression of restrained pain, and the meticulous modeling of the hair, the beard, and the crown of thorns give the image an intense devotional dimension.

The composition alludes to the Christian tradition according to which Veronica gave a cloth to Christ on the way to Calvary and His face was miraculously imprinted on it. The motif is related to one of the most venerated relics in Christianity.

The work is executed on light brown-toned paper using charcoal or black chalk, with significant touches of white chalk to model the highlights of the face, forehead, eyelids, hair, and the cloth. This contrast between dark and white creates a grisaille with strong plastic force, in which Christ’s face seems to emerge from the veiled background.

In subject, spirituality, and technique, the drawing is part of the German and Central European religious tradition of the 19th century, particularly close to the sensibility of the Nazarene movement. The Nazarenes sought a renewal of art by recovering Christian, medieval, and Renaissance ideals, and established an influential community of artists in Rome from 1810–1811. Friedrich Overbeck was one of the central figures of this movement.

The work is presented as signed “Charles Rouget,” according to information provided by the seller. However, no public documentation has been located that allows establishing a reliable biography for said artist or linking him with certainty to the Nazarene painters. For this reason, the signature and authorship should be assessed by the buyer from the photographs and their own expert judgment.

Conservation status: the paper shows waviness, creases, stains, surface dirt, oxidation spots, and small marginal losses or tears. There is also a white strip of support or mounting visible on one side. The work is sold in its current state, recommended for restoration, consolidation, and professional mounting. The photographs are an essential part of the description and clearly reflect the condition.

A work of large format and visual impact, especially attractive to collectors of sacred art, European religious drawing, Passion iconography, and grisaille works of the 19th century or Nazarene taste.
