Caracalla ruled during a period of growing military dominance in Roman politics. He is best known for the Constitutio Antoniniana of 212 AD, which granted Roman citizenship to nearly all free inhabitants of the empire. His reign was marked by heavy military spending, campaigns in Germany and the East, and increasing reliance on the army. He was assassinated in 217 AD while preparing for further war against Parthia.
