AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Table from Piedmont in the second half of the 19th century. Solid walnut wood and poplar with removable top and one drawer.
The piece has undergone two restorations. The first, very modest, in the 90s, at a joinery level where internal reinforcements were added. The second in May 2026 with a restoration aimed at enhancing the antique character of the furniture.

The table has undergone the following restoration activities:

- stripping
- two treatments with anti-woodworm product and a 3-week waiting period wrapped in a plastic chamber
- filling of worm-eaten holes and a crack that had developed in the top. The filling was done with rabbit glue and Bologna plaster for the worm holes and with strong glue and Bologna plaster for the crack.
- sanding
- reinforcing the bottom of the furniture and the raw parts with consolidant
- staining with walnut mordant
- re-covering the inner drawer with Varese paper and the second inner drawer
- varnishing with lacquer (first coat brushed and three coats pad for polishing)
- final polishing with encaustic wax

Typical example of late 1800s furniture from Piedmontese peasant houses, with a size difficult to find and smaller than standard tables. The table presents turned legs that are slightly bulbous with a balustrade and rings in line with the local production of the time. The top is composed of 3 adjacent boards, while the drawer features a wooden knob. The top is removable and provides access to a second inner drawer reupholstered. The irregular color, evident in lighter and darker areas, is due to the previous non-uniform finishing caused by the worm-eaten holes and, probably, the humidity to which this table was subjected for many years. While the boards and side slats are in walnut, the legs are presumably in poplar.
