Description from the seller
MAGICAL ZOOMORPHIC STATUE « NKISI NKONDI » NAIL-CLAD - decorative piece – CONGO
Dimensions :
LENGTH : 50 cm
WIDTH : 20 cm
HEIGHT : 18 cm
Diameter : 49 cm
MATERIALS : Wood, metal (nails), ritual charges
This remarkable zoomorphic statuette belongs to the tradition of Nkisi Nkondi, powerful ritual objects of the Congo peoples, and more specifically the Kongo culture. These sacred sculptures are regarded as receptacles of spirits capable of acting in the visible and invisible worlds.
The Nkondi (plural: Minkondi) is conceived as a forceful object charged with a precise mission. Its main function is to harbor a spirit capable of leaving its base to pursue wrongdoers, enforce oaths, protect the community, or neutralize malicious forces. These figures were often displayed publicly and activated during collective rituals.
The nails, driven into the wood, play an essential role. Each nail represents an invocation, an oath, a request for justice, or a spiritual activation. This ritual gesture is described by the Kongo expression « koma nloka », meaning “to hammer or fix a curse,” an action intended to mobilize spiritual forces.
The Nkisi is part of the belief system related to Kindoki, a complex notion associated with the ability to interact with invisible forces. If this power is used for selfish aims, it is regarded as sorcery; however, when exercised publicly to protect the community, it is seen as a legitimate act of spiritual defense.
Through its imposing presence, its ritual markings, and its symbolic charge, this statuette embodies the protective and judicial power inherent in the spiritual traditions of Central Africa. It testifies to a rich cosmology where objects serve as intermediaries between humans and the spirit world.
